"The Book Club is a great forum in which to discuss your favorite comics in-depth. We don't just go over the book itself, we examine the influences upon its creation, and follow the career arcs of the artists and writers who created it. What results is an at times critical, but always enthusiastic, examination of the world of comics in its entirety. It's an experience I can't get anywhere else."

"Whether you're interested in unlocking the secrets of making better comics, or just want to enjoy comics more as a reader, Andy's Book Club is for you. It's like sitting around with your comic book friends and talking about a great story -- except your "friends" are all really smart and motivated, and the person leading the discussion -- Andy -- is an experienced editor, writer, and teacher. Having an online forum to discuss the books before and after the live online Club meetings is worth the price of admission alone. And when a creator of the book being studied actually stops by, that's an added bonus! Bottom line, in a short time, you'll be appreciating, enjoying and maybe even creating comics at a whole new level."

"The Book Club gives us a unique opportunity to discuss some of the most influential comics ever printed with fans, friends and industry professionals in an unique and engaging setting. Plus, it's a whole lot of fun."

"I got to read and discuss a book I probably wouldn't have picked up for myself, much to my delight. The presentations about the creators, Andy's insights and comments by fellow Book Clubbers informed and enriched the reading experience mightily; I find it refreshing to have every aspect of a sequential narrative so thoroughly examined and discussed. It's great when comics are taken seriously in a fun way."

"I found the Comics Experience Book Club to be an enlightening and rewarding experience. For the inaugural session, the class read Green Lantern: Rebirth. And while I have previously read the material, the book club helped me see and appreciate Rebirth in new ways. In addition to detailed presentations on the histories of the characters and creators given by classmates, Andy Schmidt provided a unique perspective of the story telling based on his experience as a veteran comic book writer and editor. As an aspiring comic book writer, this type of analysis and insight is invaluable and will only be enhanced by Andy's plans to include the comic book creators behind the source material as participants in the discussion.
"The club also fosters a feeling of camaraderie that is reminiscent of when I used to hang out at the local comic shop and discuss comics with other fans. It is clear that everyone in the club shares a love of the comics medium, in general, and the Rebirth story, in particular. In this modern world where online anonymity breeds insensitivity and hostility, it was refreshing to be part of such a knowledgeable and positive group. I will definitely be signing up for this club when it is offered and highly recommend it to other aspiring writers (or comic fans)."

| COMICS EXPERIENCE BOOK CLUB |
Have you ever wished you had a group of smart, engaged friends to really break down why a graphic novel is so great--or effective--or just plain fun? Do you ever wish you could talk directly to the writer or artist of a book after you've read it? Would you like to know what a professional editor sees when he reads a comic book? Then you should join the CE Book Club!
Every month, Andy Schmidt and the CE Book Club hold an in-depth discussion and analysis of a comic collection or graphic novel. Each online, two-hour session is a fun and engaging way to grow as a reader and creator.
What's it like exactly? Well, here's some examples of what CE Book Club members have done:
Talked to Robert Kirkman about The Walking Dead, and how he began self-publishing with nothing more than great ideas and a soon-to-be maxed out credit card. |
Heard Kurt Busiek speak on the development of Arrowsmith and how to manage a writing career. |
Watched video motion comics created by classmates covering David Mazzucchelli's career and art, before discussing the amazing graphic novel, Asterios Polyp. |
Viewed presentations on how Mark Millar and Neil Gaiman got started in comics, while discussing Ultimates and Sandman, respectively. |
We review a different comic book movie every month now, too! Via chat and getting together on the forums. |
And coming soon: a discussion of the hot new Vertigo Crime book Area 10 with both writer Christos Gage and artist Chris Samnee in attendance! |

The CE Book Club meets once a month, every second Tuesday of the month. We meet for two hours at a time online starting at 9:00pm EST. |
You’ll get the group’s collective analysis and discussion on the book, as well as Andy’s professional review. |
Every third meeting will have a guest creator associated with that month’s selection to give a behind-the-scenes talk and Q&A.* |
Members have exclusive access to the CE Book Club forum and stay active all month long. |
Discussion topics and points of interest are distributed in advance of the meeting to enhance discussion and the reading experience. |
Members participate in and prepare voluntary presentations on related topics. It's fine to sit back and listen--or jump right in! |
One member of the group picks a new single-issue comic each month for everyone to read and review on the forum (voluntary, of course). It’s a great way to try new comics you might not have otherwise. |
Once a month we gather online together to review a comic book movie, too! First one was DAREDEVIL--ouch--but still so much fun to discuss and analyze it with a group of creative people. |
A great learning tool, a great socializing event, and a great networking opportunity, set in an upbeat, enthusiastic, and encouraging environment for your hobby and your art. |
All are welcome! You do not need to be a Comics Experience alumnus! |
Technical Requirements are simple: Internet access and either a computer headset or a telephone is all you need. |
If you love comics and want to grow to appreciate them even more, you just can’t miss out on the CE Book Club—no other comics club offers expert opinions and analysis like this.
